The Mentoring Program
Purpose:
The Mentoring Program Mission is to improve the skills and quality of our roving umpires/rreferees. This is done through a learn by doing program, which includes teaching specific standards and techniques.
Objective:
Raise the level of competency of our roving umpires/referees, resulting in more effective and sonsistent officiating. This program is incremental to our normal training and certification process
Description:
We divide CTUA members into three groups: Mentors, Veterans and Recruits (less than two certifications).
The Mentoring program is a three-phase program:
We discuss Roving Umpire standards and techniques in a presentation at a general meeting. We presume knowledge of the rules through the recent certification schools. Everyone is invited,
First Mentoring Assignment: Recruits will attend a tournament at which the Mentor is working. The Recruit must have a uniform to participate. The Recruits will get four hours on site, on court training, working side by side with the mentor. High interaction and verbal discussion is the standard - learning by doing is the goal. Recruits must attend this session before getting an assignment. A maximum of two recruits will be mentored at one time. Veterans may participate voluntarily.
Second Mentoring Assignment, on court training for a full shift with the first 2 hours shadowing with an assigned mentor. Then through observations and discussion we can evaluate the effectiveness of the session and decide if any follow up action is necessary.
